The Jackson School of International Studies (JSIS) combines the social sciences, humanities, and professional fields to enhance our understanding of our increasingly interconnected globe. JSIS currently offers seven undergraduate majors, 14 minors, and nine interdisciplinary MA degrees, as well as a new Ph.D. Program. JSIS is a department in the Social Sciences Division of the UW College of Arts and Sciences.
The Ellison Center for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies (REECAS) is a National Resource Center funded by the Title VI Program of the US Department of Education, promoting in-depth interdisciplinary study of the region. We offer undergraduate degree tracks within the European Studies Major and International Studies Majors as well as a Master's Degree in Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies; we sponsor lectures, conferences and exchanges covering the entirety of Eastern Europe and Eurasia; and we sustain a dynamic program of outreach to local schools, colleges and community organizations interested in our region.
Our Jackson School of International Studies (JSIS) has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time, 50% Outreach Coordinator .
The Outreach Coordinator manages a diverse array of Ellison Center public engagement and professional development programs for the UW campus, K-12 teachers, community college educators, the business community and the broader public to promote greater understanding and awareness of the region. The Outreach Coordinator also helps to develop and to manage Ellison Center curriculum resources for teachers and speaks publicly on Russia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Additional responsibilities include developing and implementing all Ellison Center programs for K-12 teachers and working closely with Jackson School area and international studies outreach coordinators in developing cross-regional programs. Finally, the Outreach Coordinator will oversee the development and advancement of the center’s digital presence including web, blog and social media platforms. The Outreach Coordinator must be able to work independently and in a team. These functions are performed under the general direction of the Ellison Center Associate Director.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to):
Outreach
• Raise awareness about the Ellison Center and the REECA region by cultivating relationships with other campus entities, community organizations and the general public through events, regular communication, media, listervs and other methods;
• Coordinate independently, and with other Jackson School programs, professional development programs for K-12 teachers and community college educators and events for the general public throughout the Pacific Northwest;
• Oversee the organization and implementation of on-campus programs and other activities as needed; and
• Manage budgets for various events, speaker travel and resource acquisitions.
Publicity and Publications
• Increase visibility of Ellison Center through marketing materials for Center, events and other occasions as needed;
• Serve as editor for REECAS Newsletter and Ellison Center/REECAS blog and manage social media content production and digital presence; and
• Oversee website and web content.
Development
• Assist with fundraising activities and strategies, which includes: coordinating with advancement staff of the College of Arts and Sciences and UW Office of Advancement, annual giving, direct mail, individual solicitations to program’s discretionary fund;
• Provide after-gift stewardship, including gift acknowledgement and correspondence with donors; and
• Acquire and manage information on Ellison Center donors and prospective donors, alumni and supporters; maintain mailing lists; prepare reports on communications, fundraising and outreach efforts in collaboration with Advancement.
Program Management and Administration
• Support Associate Director in drafting grant proposals (establishing partnerships, strategic planning, budget development and monitoring and evaluation);
• Track measurable progress, manage data collection for outreach activities and draft reports for Title VI National Resource Center grants and others;
• Coordinate the practicum program for students, helping them to link with potential employers; and
• Assist in advising students on courses, fellowships, study abroad, internships, and career plans.
• Other duties as requested by the Associate Director or Director of the Ellison Center.
Liaison
• Act as a contact for Ellison Center programs, including providing program information and fielding inquiries;
• Respond to requests for specific information about the REECA-region;
• Act as a consultant, draft curricular material and acquire resources throughout the year;
• Represent Ellison Center at meetings and conferences; and
• Show initiative in improving systems to better serve the center’s audience.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Bachelor’s degree in International Studies, Communications, Education or related field;
• Minimum of 2 years professional experience in a similar role in an outreach setting;
• Advanced knowledge of web-publishing software, content development, web tools, and social media platforms;
• Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively with both university employees and members of the community;
• Ability to multitask efficiently, establishes priorities, and handles a high volume of work;
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to work effectively, pleasantly, and diplomatically in interactions with presenters, program participants, and UW faculty and staff;
• Solid writing, copy editing, and basic research skills;
• Excellent computer skills with advanced knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe InDesign, Word Press and Access with an aptitude for learning additional software programs, as needed;
• Research and writing skills as well as grant writing and reporting experience;
• Exposure to the REECA region; and
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally (5%).
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
DESIRED:
• Master’s degree in International Studies, Communications, Education, MPA, MBA, or related field and world language skills;
• Experience working in a university environment;
• Familiarity with P-20 education and teacher audiences;
• Experience working or living in the REECA region; and
• Ability to speak a language from the REECA region.
Condition of Employment:
Flexible hours necessary; some evening and weekend work is required. Continuation of position beyond one year depends on the center’s continued receipt of grant funding.
